A small round punched-out area in the retina where fungus Histoplasma spores, seed in the eye. There may be many spots in one or both eyes and spread throughout the retina. If they occur in the macula, they pose a significant risk because they can prompt the development of new abnormal blood vessels under the retina. The vessels can leak, leading to permanent scarring of the macula and central vision impairment.
