An infection of the cornea due to herpes simplex virus type 1, leading to a dendritic staining pattern. Although it primarily affects the corneal surface, it may involve the corneal stroma and endothelium. It can recur and may lead to permanent scarring, ulceration, corneal hypoesthesia, and reduced vision.
