Rounded ridge or outward bulge found along the brain's cerebral hemisphere. It is broad, and usually associated with an abnormally thick cortical plate. Its function is to increase the surface area of the brain, giving rise to better cognition. The superior temporal gyrus (containing Wernicke's area) helps in computing language, while the precentral gyrus is the primary motor center of the brain.
