A type of sebaceous gland in the upper and lower eyelids that release a fatty, oily secretion, thus forming the tear film’s lipid or most exterior layer. They reduce the evaporation of tears, protecting the surface of the eyelid. They are located on the anterior palpebral margin with openings into the hair follicles of the lashes.
