A chronic, progressive, advanced form of age-related macular degeneration with large, well-defined regions of atrophy (death of cells) of retinal pigment epithelium, choriocapillaris, and outer retinal tissue. The atrophy starts from the perifoveal area then expands to the fovea and may lead to central scotoma and permanent loss of visual acuity.
