An oval-shaped aperture in the occipital bone, located in the most inferior part of the cranial fossa, where the medulla oblongata joins with the spine. Its two points include the basion (median point of the anterior margin) and the opisthion (median point of the posterior border). It is a passage of the central nervous system through the skull to connect the spinal cord and brain.
