Lenses are given a reflective coating on the outer surface, making them look like small mirrors and giving a gray or brown tint to the wearer's vision. The technique decreases the level of light getting through the tinted lens by up to 60%. It is especially useful for conditions of higher altitudes, snow, sand and water. This method is usually used for high index lenses because they are resistant to chemical dyes.
