Intraretinal hemorrhages from the superficial capillary plexus. The flame or feather-shaped hemorrhages have unclear margins indicating that blood builds up at the nerve fiber layer level. It reflects the nerve fiber layers structure that runs parallel to the surface of the retina. The condition arises in hypertensive retinopathy.
