A large, elongated, active cell of connective tissue that continuously secretes extracellular matrix (collagen and other fibers) to maintain the connective tissue’s structural integrity. It is also responsible for the repair of wounded tissue by transforming phenotypes and synthesizing the necessary building blocks.
