A surgical procedure where the cataract is extracted by phacoemulsification, disintegrating the nucleus and cortex of the crystalline lens using ultrasonic vibrations and suctioning out the particles from the eye. The procedure leaves behind a partially attached posterior elastic capsule to allow for intraocular lens implantation.
