A type of local anesthesia designed to block pain sensation in the area it is administered. However, unlike amide-linked anesthetics, ester-linked anesthetics degrade faster (only last 20-30 mins in the eye) due to the presence of esterases in the eye. Examples include procaine that is well-hydrolyzed by plasma esterases, accounting for the short duration of action in the eye.
