The outermost anterior surface of the cornea covered by membranous cellular tissue. It consists of 5-7 layers of nonkeratinized, stratified squamous epithelial cells and maintained by limbal epithelial stem cells on the junction of the cornea and scleral. It is transparent and protects the eye from the external environment.
