Irritation and inflammation of episcleral tissues due to unknown causes; although it has associations with conditions like Sjogren syndrome, herpes zoster, tuberculosis, syphilis, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is a relatively, frequently recurring, self-limited cause of red eye and discomfort. It is divided into simple and nodular types and should be distinguished from the more severe scleritis.
