A thin membrane comprising of loose, fibrous, elastic tissues, and small blood vessels covering the sclera. It is the outermost scleral layer lying between tenon’s capsule and superficial scleral stroma. It consists of two layers loosely joined together; the outer layer which is more superficial, and the deeper visceral layer that consists of an anastomotic vessel network.
