Sudden blockage of an artery or blood vessel due to blood clot (embolus), air bubble, or a foreign body that gets stuck while traveling in the bloodstream. The cells that usually get supplied with blood are denied oxygen (ischemia) and die. Types of embolism include retinal, pulmonary, brain, septic, amniotic, air, and fat. It can cause a stroke and pulmonary embolism.
