Abnormal build-up of serum in the macula from leaking, damaged, retinal blood vessels underneath the macula, leading to swelling and distorted vision. Neovascularization lacks tight junctions, which results in uncharacteristic fluid leakage in the retina. The condition is often caused by diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, ocular inflammation, and eye surgery.
