Retinal swelling of the macula that occurs when the usual blood-retina barrier is disrupted, causing the perifoveal retinal capillaries to leak with fluid accumulation in the outer plexiform layer. The effect, though painless, may be decreased or blurred central vision but without affecting peripheral vision.
