A retinal disorder marked by damage to the macula caused by disturbance of the inner blood-retinal barrier. It results in seepage of the perifoveal retinal vessels and fluid buildup in the retinal intracellular areas, particularly in the outer plexiform layer. The thickening of the retina and accumulation of fluid distort the photoreceptors architecture resulting in vision loss. The condition is a significant cause of loss of central vision in the industrialized world.
