The milder, early form of diabetic retinopathy characterized by microaneurysms in the retinal blood vessels and nerves due to diabetes. It is caused by adverse changes in the pericyte and endothelial cells of retinal blood vessels and eventually progresses to proliferative diabetic retinopathy if not controlled.
