The ability of the lens to sustain desired amounts of image quality without the need to refocus after an object has been repositioned. It is the axial range over which an object can be moved without reducing sharpness beyond tolerable amounts. For example, in an older eye, the depth of field decreases when the diaphragm or pupil diameter diminishes.
