Occurs when type 1 herpes virus attacks the corneal surface, and sometimes the corneal stroma, causing inflammation (keratitis). Type 1 herpes is a contagious virus that causes cold sores around the mouth and lips. The stroma is probably involved due to an immunologic response to the virus.
