Patches of corneal thinning incidental to the dehydration of the stroma. They are suspected to be associated with tear film instability, especially lack of the mucin layer in the tear film. The condition can be idiopathic or due to various factors including trabeculectomy, surgery, conjunctival chemosis and prolonged contact lens wear. Frequent ocular lubrication may restore stromal hydration.
