A procedure where the eye focusing muscles are temporarily paralyzed to allow the determination of the complete refractive error. Cycloplegic eye drops are applied to momentary paralyze the ciliary body of the eyes. The procedure is not part of a routine eye exam and is indicated in certain situations. It is particularly useful in young children and patients having high hyperopia or sufficiently accommodative esotropia needing more accommodative effort.
