Cupping of the optic nerve describes the appearance of a sizeable cup-to-disc ratio. The nerve seems like a cup when viewed through the pupil from above. The more the nerve fibers get damaged, the more the cup enlarges; hence, the eye doctor describes the amount of cupping as ‘cup-to-disc ratio’ or C/D ratio.
