One of several epithelial cell types oriented in layers from anterior to posterior of the corneal structure. Corneal epithelial wing cells are formed from the aging layer of basal cells, which flatten and form the superbasal wing-like cells as they leave the basal layer. The layers of wing cells are joined together by adherens junctions and desmosomes.
