Visual images exhibited after removal of the actual visual stimulus. For example, prolonged exposure to color bleaches of photoreceptors may lead to false color perception. If an individual also stares at a bright incandescent lightbulb then closes the eyes, the image of the bulb will persist briefly, with the afterimage showing blue instead of the original yellow color of the bulb.
