A procedure employed during cataract surgery to remove the crystalline lens capsule by stretch and shear forces. It is usually used to remove a section of the anterior lens capsule and can also be deployed in removing a portion of the posterior capsule in conditions such as a developmental cataract. It is the preferred capsulotomy procedure during the insertion of a rigid intraocular lens since the incision is unlikely to tear.
