A drug made from botulinum toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. In small doses, it has many medical and cosmetic uses. Its injections paralyze or weaken the muscle, or block specific nerves and are best known for skin wrinkles therapy. The drug is also useful in the treatment of eyelid spasms, crossed eyes, neck muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and some bladder diseases. The effects of the toxin can last for three to twelve months, depending on the disorder.
