It is a form of visual processing where perception starts with the stimulus itself, and sensory information is processed as it comes in. The processing is built from the smallest pieces of sensory information and flows in one direction, i.e., from the retina to the visual cortex. Each successive stage in the optical channel performs an ever more sophisticated analysis of the signal/input.
