An abnormal, drooping upper eyelid margin that may involve one or both eyes. The condition can be congenital, where it is present at birth due to weakness or deficient development of the levator palpebrae muscle that works the eyelid. In adults, the disorder occurs due to disease, aging, or eye surgery affecting the levator palpebrae muscle or its nerve.
