An eye disorder characterized by the partial or complete lack of the iris - the colored area of the eye. It can be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait or be acquired due to trauma. Iris abnormalities can cause the pupils to be misshapen or be abnormal. The disorder can cause a decrease in visual acuity (the clarity of vision) and photophobia (enhanced sensitivity to light). In congenital cases, patients usually have amblyopia and occasionally nystagmus.
