A sweating abnormality marked by the absence of sweat glands or the inability to sweat normally. The failure to produce sweat in response to pharmacologic or thermal stimulation may be harmful. Sweating releases heat from the body, allowing it to cool. Sweating deficiency may lead to a medical emergency with heat exhaustion, hyperthermia, heatstroke and death. The disorder may be segmental in the distribution or affect the entire body. It is often associated with autonomic or thermoregulatory control involving the peripheral or central nervous systems.
