Tsutomu Sato, a Japanese ophthalmologist made the first practical attempt to perform refractive surgery in military pilots. He introduced radial cuts in the cornea to correct up to 6 diopters.
This procedure was soon rejected by the medical community due to the high rate of corneal degeneration.
