Charles D. Kelman was an American ophthalmologist who introduced phacoemusification. The technique utilized ultrasound and mechanized irrigation/aspiration, which allowed for cataract extraction through a small incision.
He received the National Medal of Technology from President George H. Bush in 1992, and was inducted in 2004 into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
