Albrecht von Graefe (Germany), along with Helmholtz and Donders, was called one of the founding fathers of ophthalmology as a specialty.
He was a pioneer in mapping visual field defects and diagnosis/treatment of glaucoma. His cataract extraction technique remained the standard for over 100 years. He rationalized the use of many important drugs (e.g. mydriatics and miotics).
